When I was in the sixth grade I won my first elected office.
Every sixth grade classroom nominated one boy and one girl for Mr. and Miss Eagle.
Grades three through six would vote following a presentation where the candidates would make a speech.
I knew that the sixth graders would all vote for the people in their class, so I needed name recognition with the other kids.
I was the last to speak.
I walked up to the podium with a blank piece of paper in my hand.
I said, “Hello, my name is…” And then I paused and looked confused and nervous. I pretended to forget my own name.
Kids started giggling.
Then I tried really hard to read my name from the invisible speech on the paper.
Kids started laughing.
Then I walked over to a teacher and pointed to the paper and pretended that she read my name to me.
Kids started roaring.
Then I walked back to the podium and yelled, “My name is Joe Winett! Vote me for Mr. Eagle!!”
Landslide.
