Why the Sky is Blue

The sky is blue because puppies are cute.

Actually, the sky is blue because the molecules in the atmosphere scatter more blue light than red light.  This is why when the sun is low on the horizon the sky looks more red — the blue light was scattered away from our line of sight.

It was once thought that water drops or other particles in the air caused the scattering.  Scientists realized if this was the case, then the sky color would vary more according to haze and humidity.

That man who had the nerve to call himself Einstein settled the discussion in 1911 when he proved by calculation that the electromagnetic fields of the light passing through the atmosphere induces electric dipole moments in the molecules in it.  His work was later proved by experiment.

Whew.  Puppies, see?
