Apparently Motorola has my email address because they sent me an ad last night for this DROID2 phone which runs the Android 2.2 operating system.
This is pretty funny because I can’t actually afford things like cell phones or internet service or food. But, Motorola doesn’t know that.
A man who can afford cell phones, internet service, and food, is George Lucas — our American Genius Hero guy who created the whole concept of merchandise licensing for movies.
You see, Lucas directed American Graffiti, the movie. And that movie did well.
Apparently Lucas did that movie to prove to Fox that he could direct before Fox green lighted the movie Lucas really wanted to do: Star Wars.
Lucas was paid $100,000 for directing American Graffiti.
It would have been customary for him to get a good raise for his second movie considering the success of his first. Star Wars would have been a big payday for him.
Instead, Lucas traded a raise away to Fox. All Fox had to do was give Lucas the sequel rights. So, Lucas would be allowed to make a sequel to Star Wars without paying Fox anything. And, when a sequel was made, Lucas would regain all the merchandise licensing rights.
$40 billion in Star Wars merchandise has been sold in 30 years.
Every time a Star Wars action figure is sold, George Lucas gets another pair of wings.
Guess what!!! George Lucas was also paid by Motorola to use the word “DRIOD.”
DROID is a trademark of Lucasfilm Ltd. and its related companies. Used under license.
Fox. Oh, Fox. You did get out of paying Lucas $500,000 or something like that on his director’s fee, but threw away BILLIONS.
What droids.
