In 1983, I had made some friends online on local bulletin board systems.
A bulletin board system was a computer connected to a phone line by a modem. You would sit down at your computer and have it dial directly to the BBS system and connect. You would be prompted for your username and password and then be told about any new messages. The boards had public forums where people could discuss and argue about things (the same things they discuss and argue about now, mostly).
On some of the boards, there was this guy who never gave his real identity. He went by The Central Scrutinizer and he made up all sorts of funny stuff and gave people a hard time. We loved it.
We decided to meet one night at a local pizza place.
I was very excited. There were going to be girls there. I had heard rumors about girls but had never seen one outside of captivity (school).
While we were sitting at our table, this big tall guy comes in wearing dark glasses…
Well, read this summary written by one of the girls after that night.

The girl? Yes, I liked her. I liked her a lot. I liked her too much. I couldn’t live without her. I drove her crazy. I was mean sometimes.
I’m sorry Trillian!!
“We want a board!”
